Why Choose a Career in Barbering?

Before diving into the logistics of barber school, let’s take a moment to understand why this career path could be right for you.

1. Creative Expression

Barbering is an art. From classic cuts to modern fades and intricate designs, you’ll have the chance to express yourself through your work every day.

2. Job Stability

Hair keeps growing, and people always want to look good. That means barbers are consistently in demand. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for barbers is expected to grow steadily over the next decade.

3. Flexible Career Options

Whether you dream of working in a high-end barbershop, opening your own business, or traveling as a platform artist, barbering offers a range of career paths.

4. Personal Fulfillment

As a barber, you have the power to boost someone’s confidence with a great cut. You’ll also build real connections with clients and be a positive part of their daily lives.

What You’ll Learn in Barber School

Barbering goes far beyond haircuts. At Shear Excellence Hair Academy, our Barber Hair Design Program is designed to equip you with the technical skills, theoretical knowledge, and hands-on experience needed to succeed in today’s barbering industry.

Key Areas of Training:

  • Haircutting techniques: Fades, tapers, shaves, trims, scissor and clipper work
  • Shaving and beard grooming: Straight razor shaving, beard sculpting, and mustache trimming
  • Sanitation and safety: Infection control, disinfection practices, and client protection
  • Hair and scalp treatments: Scalp massages, treatments for common hair conditions
  • Basic skincare: Facials, steam treatments, and skin analysis
  • Barbering tools: Mastery of clippers, razors, shears, and styling equipment
  • State laws and regulations: Licensing requirements and client rights
  • Business skills: Client retention, marketing, and barbershop management

We combine theory classes with hands-on practice in our student salon, where you’ll work with real clients under the supervision of licensed instructors.

How Long is Barber School?

At Shear Excellence Hair Academy, our program is 900 hours, meaning you could complete the program in as little as six months if attending full-time!

Flexible Scheduling Options:

  • Full-time students can graduate in about 6 months
  • Part-time students may take longer, depending on their schedule

We know our students come from all walks of life—that’s why we offer flexible scheduling options to help you balance school, work, and other responsibilities while pursuing your passion for barbering.

Admission Requirements for Barber School

Ready to get started at Shear Excellence Hair Academy? Before you can enroll in our barbering program, you’ll need to meet a few basic requirements.

Here’s what you need:

  • Be at least 16 years old (as required by the Florida State Board of Cosmetology & Barber Board)
  • Have a high school diploma or GED

We also accept the following as diploma equivalents:

  • A GED certificate
  • A home-school certificate that meets Florida state guidelines
  • A self-certification from international students if transcripts can’t be obtained due to political issues

Don’t have a diploma or GED?

You may still be able to enroll by taking a basic skills test called the Wonderlic ATB (Ability to Benefit) test, which measures reading and math skills.

  • You’ll need a verbal score of at least 200 and a math score of at least 210 to pass.

Important: If you plan to use federal financial aid (Title IV funding), this option is not available. The ATB pathway is only open to students who are paying for school out-of-pocket.

How Much Does Barber School Cost?

Education is an investment in your future. While costs can vary depending on location and program, you can expect the average tuition for barber school to range from $10,000 to $20,000. This generally includes:

  • Tuition fees
  • Books and learning materials
  • Barber kit (tools, clippers, shears, etc.)
  • Uniforms

Financial Aid Options

At Shear Excellence Hair Academy, we believe everyone deserves a shot at success. That’s why we offer several *financial aid options, including:

  • Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Grants and scholarships
  • Veterans benefits
  • Flexible payment plans

Our Financial Aid Office can help you apply for assistance and create a plan that works for your budget.

What Happens After You Graduate?

Graduating from barber school is a major milestone—but it’s not the final step. Once you’ve completed your required training hours, you’ll be eligible to take the state licensing exam.

The Licensing Process:

  1. Complete the required hours through a state-approved program
  2. Apply for your license with the state’s barbering board
  3. Pass the written exam, which tests your knowledge of laws, safety, and theory
  4. Pass the practical exam, which demonstrates your hands-on barbering skills
  5. Receive your license and start working as a professional barber!

At Shear Excellence, we prepare you thoroughly for the licensing process so you feel confident walking into both your written and practical exams.

What Tools Will You Use in Barber School?

Your barbering kit will be your best friend throughout school and your career. Here’s a look at what most kits include:

  • Clippers and guards
  • Trimmers and edgers
  • Straight razor and blades
  • Shears and texturizing scissors
  • Combs, brushes, and sectioning clips
  • Blow dryer and styling tools
  • Cape, neck strips, and sanitizing sprays
  • Mannequin heads for practice

Learning how to properly maintain and sanitize your tools is a core part of your training at Shear Excellence.
